I’m calling it early for the October 28, 2026 meta: Patch 9.0 turned cavalry from a pretty unit-card flex into a timing test. A campaign-buffed Gryphon Legion can push past 100 Charge Bonus and erase an infantry flank, but one mistimed hit into braced halberds still turns elite-cavalry upkeep into a liability. That’s the razor’s edge I’m judging riders on right now: impact, mass, anti-large trading, and whether they survive after the first collision. Patch 9.0.3 is the latest documented balance reference I can point to; for 9.0.4 unit-stat changes, I don’t have publicly verifiable data, so I’m not going to pretend otherwise.

The Ranking: S-Tier Riders That Actually Earn Their Keep

For the best cavalry Warhammer 3 roster, clean charge paths and post-charge survivability matter more than an attractive unit card. A horse-sized unit with a huge bonus can still die to braced elite infantry, while monstrous cavalry can use mass and splash damage to force a safer exit. Treat this as an Immortal Empires ranking, not a guarantee that every unit can anchor a doomstack alone.

Tier Unit My verdict: role, target, and Patch 9.0-era edge
S / 1 Grail Knights Best all-round anti-large shock cavalry; hunt monsters, cavalry, and isolated lords with Perfect Vigour and magic damage.
S / 2 Crushers (Great Weapons) Monstrous anti-large bruisers; crush large targets with 80 Charge Bonus, huge mass, and splash damage.
S / 3 Blood Knights Regeneration-heavy shock cavalry for prolonged undead fights; target elite cavalry or exposed infantry after the 9.0 rework.
S / 4 Skullcrushers of Khorne Premier anti-infantry commit unit; 150 armor, physical resistance, and AP let them keep brawling.
A / 5 Royal Hippogryph Knights Flying monstrous cavalry for terror, sieges, and lord hunting; use flight to choose the engagement.
A specialist Demigryph Knights (Halberds) Empire’s cost-effective monster hunters; take them into large targets, not infantry blobs.
A specialist Gryphon Legion Kislev flank-delete tool; campaign buffs can push them beyond 100 Charge Bonus.
A specialist Pleasureseekers Fast rear-charge assassins; Devastating Flanker doubles their charge bonus from the rear.

Shock Cavalry: Who Deletes Infantry?

Against ordinary infantry, Skullcrushers are my reliable answer because 150 armor and monstrous mass let them remain engaged after impact instead of instantly paying the disengage micro tax. They don’t just hit; they stay in the brawl, keep swinging, and let AP do the rest. Campaign-buffed Gryphon Legion offer a nastier initial burst at 100+ Charge Bonus, but I treat them as a cycle-charge scalpel, not a grinding line-holder. Leave them in braced high-tier infantry and you’re basically donating gold to the enemy.

Pleasureseekers are the high-risk, high-reward flank weapon. Use them only on an exposed rear: Devastating Flanker creates brutal burst damage, but their fragility makes them a high-micro tool, not a line-holder. Monstrous cavalry such as Crushers push through formations more safely than horse-sized riders because mass and splash damage reduce the chance of being trapped in a spear meat-grinder. That’s the difference between a clean flank delete and a very expensive oops.

Anti-Large: Grail Knights, Crushers, and the End Times Meta

When cavalry, monsters, or a lone lord need deleting, Grail Knights remain the gold standard because Perfect Vigour prevents the fatigue collapse that ruins long multi-stack battles. They bring magic damage, clean anti-large trading, and enough speed to pick the fight I want. If I’m building a Bretonnian late-game hammer, they’re the first name on the sheet.

Crushers (Great Weapons) are the raw head-to-head monsters: community testing places them at 74 Melee Attack versus large targets, backed by splash damage that can hit multiple entities. They’re not subtle, and that’s the point. For Empire armies, Demigryph Knights (Halberds) are the more accessible specialized monster-hunter choice, while Patch 9.0.3 also reduced Knights Panther cost by 50 gold — a real bang-for-buck nudge for players who want more bodies on the flank.

In undead meat-grinders, Blood Knights trade Perfect Vigour for Regeneration; the 9.0 Vampire Counts rework improved healing caps, and Nagash’s Black Pyramid unlocks can further amplify undead cavalry. That sustain matters when the fight drags into a second and third collision. Royal Hippogryph Knights sit in A-tier for me because flight is the whole game: terror, sieges, and lord hunting all become easier when I can choose the engagement instead of accepting the enemy’s.

Faction Builds: Pick Your Horsepower

I’d choose Bretonnia for the safest late-game all-round cavalry roster, Vampire Counts for regeneration-heavy attrition, Khorne for armored brute force, Empire for specialized counters, and Nurgle for debuff-driven grind through units such as Rot Knights. Avoid premature doomstacking: recruitment access and elite upkeep can punish a campaign before I field enough supporting infantry, magic, or healing. For LDO efficiency, Grail Knights and Crushers offer the cleanest high-end returns; for casual Immortal Empires, Blood Knights under Nagash create the more forgiving sustained-combat fantasy.

My final call for this meta is simple: judge cavalry by the first ten seconds and the ten after that. Impact matters, but survivability pays the bills. Check your current edition, DLC, and Immortal Empires access before committing to a cavalry-focused campaign — and don’t sleep on the humble cycle-charge. It’s still the difference between a highlight reel and a graveyard of expensive horses. ⚔️
